Threat to Marwan Barghouti’s Life Escalates as Family Targeted in Intimidation Campaign

Israeli authorities pose a direct threat to the life of Marwan Barghouti, the imprisoned Palestinian leader, as a campaign of escalating pressure extends to his family, the Prisoners’ Media Office warned today.
The 66-year-old’s family received a phone call this morning in which the caller conveyed fabricated and alarming information about Barghouti’s condition inside prison, a tactic the Office described as psychological intimidation consistent with broader Israeli policies targeting prisoners’ families.
The call comes amid what the Office characterized as severe treatment of Barghouti, including prolonged solitary confinement, torture, and denial of both visitation and communication rights. Public threats from far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir have heightened concerns, signaling what the Office called a serious intent to target Barghouti’s life directly.
The Prisoners’ Media Office said Israeli authorities bear full responsibility for Barghouti’s safety and that of all prisoners. It called on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and human rights organizations to intervene immediately and investigate the escalating violations inside Israeli prisons.
International silence, the Office warned, provides cover for continued abuses against prisoners, and carries both moral and legal responsibility for any deterioration in their condition.
