Serious Escalation Targeting Leaders and Prominent Figures of the Prisoner Movement

The Prisoners’ Media Office has warned that Israeli prison authorities are directly targeting leaders of the Palestinian prisoner movement through violent assaults designed to break their will and use them to intimidate other detainees.
In a statement, the Office said riot suppression units dragged several prominent prisoner leaders into section courtyards and beat them with batons until they bled. Among those targeted were Abdullah Al-Barghouti, Bilal Al-Barghouti, and Ahed Ghulma. The Office described the attacks as failed attempts to subjugate the leaders and make “examples” of them.
Authorities have also intensified psychological pressure on prisoner leadership, the statement said, including threats and security measures targeting the family of Marwan Al-Barghouti.
The assaults come amid what the Office called the most difficult conditions the prisoner movement has faced in decades. Detainees are subjected to daily beatings, deliberate food deprivation, and exposure to severe cold without winter clothing or blankets. Diseases are spreading while medical care is systematically withheld, a practice the Office characterized as “slow killing.”The Office held Israeli authorities fully responsible, stating that conditions inside the prisons constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. It called on international bodies and human rights organizations to intervene urgently, protect the prisoners, and hold Israeli leaders accountable.
