He has severe stomach pain and a swelling in his abdomen that won’t go away. Nobody knows the cause. He had scabies earlier but has since recovered.

His family says his condition is alarming. Lawyer visits are tightly restricted, and news of him rarely gets out.

They have tried every route open to them to get a request for his treatment submitted. Every attempt failed. The state of emergency imposed on the prisons since the war broke out has slowed all procedures, and the longer the delay, the greater the risk to his health.

In his section of Nafha, Moath has just two pieces of clothing.

Prisoners are allowed out to the yard every other day. Any collective punishment, or any incident anywhere in the prison, can cost the entire section even that.

Moath, 31, was born on January 12, 1994, and comes from Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The occupation arrested him on July 27, 2014, during that year’s assault on the Gaza Strip, and sentenced him to 13 and a half years. He left behind his family and everyone close to him. Now, thinking of home means thinking of loss.

During the genocidal war on Gaza, he lost seven members of his family. One was his brother, Moataz. Another was his sister’s husband, who was also his friend. The rest were more distant relatives.

He heard the news during rare lawyer visits. The lawyer who delivered it also told him, by way of reassurance, that the relatives still alive were waiting for him to come home.

It was enough to crush anyone’s spirit. All Moath could do was hold on and wait to be free.

Grief is hard enough with family around. Behind the occupation’s bars, prisoners can’t say goodbye to the people they love, attend their funerals, or receive condolences. Many prisoners from Gaza are living through this. Some have learned that relatives were martyred. Others still don’t know how much the war has taken from them, or what it has destroyed.

In prison, Moath earned two bachelor’s degrees: social work from Al-Quds University and public relations from Al-Ummah University. He also completed the coursework for a master’s in the foundations of education and civilization. But the war stopped him from finishing his thesis.

The occupation confiscated prisoners’ books and study materials and stripped away many of the educational rights the prisoners’ movement had won.

Through all of it, Moath has held on to his ambition and kept the Quran close. He has recited it in full, from memory, in a single sitting. It took about five hours.

Moath Mohammed Abu Taim has lost 24 kilograms in Nafha prison, according to the latest word to reach his family.
