The Israeli occupation is holding three brothers from Balata refugee camp without charge or trial, and it keeps extending their administrative detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The occupation has renewed the administrative detention of Mahdi, Ahmed and Jaber Bassam Abu Hamada six months at a time: four times for Mahdi, three times each for Ahmed and Jaber. All three are now being held in Ofer Prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prisoners’ Media Office sat down with the family, who described how each brother was arrested and how their health has held up since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ahmed has gone from 94 kilograms to about 70, the family said, and his health is visibly worse. He has caught scabies and is also dealing with a bacterial stomach infection and rheumatism. Before his arrest, he received regular injections as part of his treatment. The family has asked again and again for his medication to be allowed in. Prison authorities have said no every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mahdi, 23, was the first to be taken. On March 4, 2025, occupation forces stopped him at the bridge crossing into Jordan and arrested him. He was on his way to perform the Umrah pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Five weeks later, on April 9, 2025, soldiers took Ahmed, 24, from the family home. The family was stunned. They had been getting ready for his wedding that August. Now they had to call off all their plans and postpone the wedding indefinitely, and they were left grieving and anxious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ahmed was sick, and he asked his mother to bring him water,” the family said of the night he was taken. “When she tried to give it to him, she got into an argument with the officer who came with the soldiers. He nearly assaulted her just for trying to do what her son asked.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jaber, the youngest at 18, was next. Occupation forces took him from the same house on July 8, 2025. It was another shock for the family. Jaber had led an ordinary life, they said. He left each morning for his job at a poultry shop, came home in the evening and stayed out of everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ahmed worked in a restaurant, and Mahdi served in the Palestinian security services. Everyone knew the three brothers as decent young men who cared about people, were devoted to their family and were always ready to lend a hand. That is why their absence has hit the family, and their neighbors in the camp, so hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the raids, soldiers smashed doors and windows in the family home, wrecked furniture and assaulted the brothers’ parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Martyrs’ Square in Nablus, their mother holds up photos of her three sons. With them gone, she stands in for them, speaking on their behalf and demanding their right to freedom. She tells anyone who walks by what her family is going through and calls for real action to protect the prisoners and their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At home in Balata, she sits each day with the gap her three sons left and thinks back on the small details of life with them: their laughter, the evenings they came home from work, the daily routine that was the best thing the family had. Then the occupation took them from her, one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All the family asks for now is word that the brothers are all right, news of their health and a guarantee that lawyers will properly follow their cases. But the occupation bars family visits, and inside the prisons the restrictions have not let up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family is also calling on human rights groups and media organizations to do more for the prisoners’ cause. They want help clearing the obstacles families face in reaching lawyers and following their sons’ cases, and they want someone to pay attention to how those families are getting by financially. And they are asking for regular grassroots events that keep the issue in the public eye and show solidarity with prisoners facing the violations that continue inside occupation prisons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
