Four years to the day after six Palestinian prisoners tunneled out of Gilboa Prison, two of them are still behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yaqoub Qadri and Munadil Nfeiat remain in isolation, facing abuse and tight restrictions. The “Flood of the Free” prisoner exchange deal freed the other four Freedom Tunnel prisoners: Ayham Kamamji, Mahmoud and Mohammed al-Arida, and Zakaria Zubeidi. The Prisoners’ Media Office is using the anniversary to revisit the escape and draw attention to the two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On September 6, 2021, the six broke out of the heavily fortified prison. They had dug their way through its defenses, working in complete silence. The operation was unprecedented. It dealt a blow to the occupation’s security establishment and rattled its agencies. Occupation forces went on high alert across the board and stayed that way for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The occupation eventually re-arrested all six and added new sentences on top of the ones they were already serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yaqoub Qadri<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yaqoub Mahmoud Qadri, 53, is still in isolation at Ganot Prison. He is serving two life sentences plus 35 years. A native of the Bir al-Basha area in the Jenin district, he has been held in occupation prisons since 2003. His ailments include lymph node problems, a herniated disc in his back, and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yaqoub chose the Freedom Tunnel knowing what it would cost him. His sentence was already harsh. Still, he decided to resist the occupation again. After his re-arrest, the occupation added five years to his sentence and imposed a new fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind bars, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza. But he lost his parents while he was inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He never got to say goodbye to either of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Munadil Nfeiat<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Munadil Yaqoub Nfeiat, 29, is in solitary confinement at Ganot Prison. His health is poor. In isolation, he suffers from shortness of breath and stomach problems, including pain. He has lost about 15 kilograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Munadil, from the town of Ya’bad in the Jenin district, is the other member of the Gilboa tunnel group still in detention. The occupation arrested him on February 11, 2020. He was serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence when he took part in the Freedom Tunnel escape. The occupation later added five years, for a total of seven and a half, and fined him 10,000 shekels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yaqoub and Munadil are waiting for the day they leave prison and isolation behind. Their comrades already have. Until then, the two live under the occupation’s policies of abuse, punishment, and ongoing violations, aimed at them and at every other prisoner it holds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
