In a message she passed to her lawyer, Firdous says conditions in Damon are extremely harsh. She endured the repression alongside the other women until the prison began exempting her from some of it because of her health. The mobility disability is not the whole of it. She has hearing loss, chronic back pain, and a skin allergy that leaves her with severe itching. Holding her in prison puts a weight on her body that she cannot take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The starvation policy reaches her the way it reaches every woman prisoner. Food is short. No woman in Damon owns more than a single set of clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her case is still open, and the courts keep pushing it back. The next hearing is set for August 30, 2026. Her family hopes it is the last one. After months of not knowing, they want a sentence handed down so the wait for her release can finally start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Firdous is from Umm Safa, a village northwest of Ramallah. She ran a kindergarten there. People knew her for her warmth, for how she threw herself into that work, and for the care she gave her parents and the rest of her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrest shocked everyone who knew her, and it emptied more than her house. The village felt it. So did the kindergarten and the students who saw her there every day. Those children still ask after her. They wait for her to come back, and so does Umm Safa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her parents are taking it hardest. They were so used to having her around that they sometimes forget she is in prison and call out her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her family calls Firdous “the soul of the house.” Of all the children, she was the closest to her mother and father, the one who looked after them. With no warning, they lost the daughter who held them up and kept them company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
