She is held today in Damon prison, where a single year has put her through more than her age should bear. A full year of her sentence now stands behind her.

Her family cannot erase the night she was taken. Within a few hours, their daughter went from a university student preparing for her future to a prisoner led away to an unknown fate.

Salam comes from Qaryut, a town south of Nablus. Occupation forces stormed the family home in the middle of the night on June 22, 2025. They left a notice at the entrance listing accusations of “incitement,” the charge the occupation brings against most women prisoners over social media posts.

The family described the arrest to the Prisoners’ Media Office. “They started breaking down the door and banging on it, so we opened the house to them. They sat us all in the living room and told us not to move. They took our names, then they asked me, Salam’s mother, for my ID. I went to my room to get it and the women soldiers followed me. I shouted at them that I would not accept this kind of treatment, so they started shouting at me and then hit me on the shoulder with their weapons.

“Then it was Salam’s turn. They asked for her ID and her phone and followed her the way they had followed me. They filmed us, then put the restraints on her hands. I kept asking them: where are you taking her? They said: to the police. I asked them to let her change her clothes, and I remember she struggled to put her shoes on because her feet were shackled too.”

The family goes on: “They arrested Salam and shut the door on us so we could not follow her. They held the door until they got her into the military jeeps, so we could not say goodbye one last time, and when she reached outside they blindfolded her too. We will never forget that moment.”

Salam is fine, the family says, but conditions in Damon are harsh. The food and drink are poor, clothing is scarce, and what worries them most is the constant repression. It went as far as solitary confinement after she prayed in the prison yard, something she had not even known was forbidden.

She spent a full week in solitary, held in a cold room and denied the most basic needs, before being returned to her cell for only three days. Then they put her back for eight more days. She had prayed in the yard without knowing the prison administration forbade it. She had not yet grown accustomed to the prison’s rules.

Salam’s absence has left a deep emptiness in the home, and the worry never leaves her family. Her arrest cut short her university education, which deepens their pain. She was taken as her final exams began. A third-year digital marketing student at Birzeit University, known among her classmates for excelling in her studies, she had dreamed of finishing her degree in a safe and stable place.

The family does not know how much weight Salam has lost under the starvation policy inflicted on Palestinian prisoners across the occupation’s prisons, Damon among them. But they say she was thin before her arrest. Many people found it hard to believe she was a university student; she looked so young.

Only two months and a few days remain of Salam’s sentence. She will leave Damon carrying an ordeal that will stay with her for a long time. Her family waits for her release, holding on to the hope that the remaining days pass quickly, so she can return to her home, her university, and the life that was halted by force the night she was taken.

An Israeli court sentenced Salam Rizqallah Salman Kassab, 21, to fourteen months on May 31, 2026, closing nearly a year of detention and repeatedly postponed hearings.
