The transfer has raised widespread fears for his life.

His family says the move happened on June 3, when prison authorities took him from Naqab prison and placed him in isolation. They call it a punishment and a new escalation, one that comes while he already endures harsh conditions and is still denied medical care. The family holds the occupation fully responsible for his life. Keeping him in isolation and denying him treatment, they say, only heightens the danger he faces.

Human rights and medical groups are pushing harder for urgent action to save him.

Israeli forces arrested Abu Safiya on December 27, 2024, when they stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. By then his name had become tied to saving the wounded and the sick through the war. His arrest turned him into one of the clearest symbols of the occupation’s targeting of Palestinian medical staff. From the hospital he ran, soldiers took him to Israeli interrogation centers and prisons. There he faced a string of abuses documented by his family, human rights groups, and released prisoners.

Abu Safiya’s health has worsened sharply since his arrest. He has chronic heart disease and high blood pressure, and he has been denied the care he needs.

His lawyers and human rights groups have found that he caught scabies from the conditions he is held in. He has lost around 25 kilograms to hunger and medical neglect.

Released prisoners who met him inside describe repeated physical and psychological assaults: beatings, humiliation in restraints. Guards stormed his cell again and again and deprived him of the most basic human needs. His health keeps failing, they say, with no treatment and no end to the punishment.

For human rights groups, his case has become a clear example of how the occupation has gone after Palestinian medical workers who kept up their humanitarian work through the war on Gaza. They warn that holding him in these conditions puts his life at real risk.

His family is calling on the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to act now, to push for an end to his isolation and get him the medical care he needs. They have made the same appeal to international human rights groups. Every day he stays in these conditions, the family says, deepens fears for his fate in Israeli prisons.

Israeli occupation prison authorities have moved Hussam Abu Safiya, a detained Palestinian doctor, into solitary confinement at Nafha prison, days after his lawyers appealed his continued detention to the occupation’s Supreme Court.
