Congregational prayer is banned. Movement between sections is forbidden. Degrading strip searches have intensified.

In previous years, prisoners marked the holiday with what little they had. They washed their faces with rationed water, scrubbed their cells with crude tools, put on their cleanest prison clothes, and sweets from leftover sugar and bread. They exchanged greetings in whispers, afraid of punishment.

This year, even those rituals were taken from them.

In the women’s sections, a sick prisoner clutches a piece of candy her cellmates scraped together from crumbs of sugar. It does not suit her illness. It is all they had.

Mothers hide their tears when their children call and ask: “When will we see you?” They swallow the pain because Eid, despite everything, remains sacred to them.

In the children’s sections, faded visit slips become Eid cards. Boys share a single piece of chocolate and dream of a moment outside the walls. Some have never seen the sea. Some have never tasted Eid cookies.

No visits. No letters. No voice from the outside. Belongings are seized. Lawyer access is restricted. Many prisoners are denied medical care entirely.

Conditions inside are shaped by torture, starvation, and physical abuse. The ongoing genocide in Gaza has deepened the suffering. Skin diseases spread unchecked. Patients go untreated. The neglect is deliberate.

Since October 7, 2023, repression inside the prisons has reached levels without precedent. Official incitement against prisoners continues. Family visits are blocked. Lawyers face severe restrictions. The International Committee of the Red Cross is denied access. Thousands of detainees from Gaza have been forcibly disappeared.

The longing sharpens during holidays. Prisoners greet each other in whispers and force smiles when there is nothing to smile about. They wait for an Eid without bars.

More than 9,300 Palestinian prisoners will spend Eid al-Fitr in Israeli occupation prisons this year.
